In early February 2012 I attended for the first time a workshop for Portuguese translators and interpreters in Frankfurt, organised by the translation association ATICOM. The workshop’s attendees are a network of legal linguists that have been meeting once a year since 2007 in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. It is led by Prof. Dr. Tinka Reichmann (who at the time was a professor at the University of São Paulo and currently works at the University of Leipzig) and Susanna Lips (a court interpreter in Cologne).
Every year the group focuses on a specified legal sub-area. First, an invited specialist (one with a Brazilian, the other with a Portuguese background) gives a presentation on the chosen legal topic, followed by a group discussion on terminology based on actual texts and text blocks. The topic for 2012 was economic law with a focus on property law.
