Brazilian criminal procedure for translators in Frankfurt

Blog post by Fabio Said

In early February 2017 I took part in a workshop for legal Portuguese translators focusing in “key texts in Portuguese and Brazilian criminal procedure“. This is the 11th edition of a CPD event held in in Frankfurt by the German translation association ATICOM. For the sixth time in a row I took this yearly opportunity to improve my knowledge of legal terminology and exchange ideas with fellow legal translation experts.

On the first day, Brazilian lawyer Luís Henrique Alves Sobreira Machado (of the law firm Machado Ramos & Von Glehn in Brasília) gave a presentation on “An introduction to Brazilian criminal procedure“, followed by a questions & answers session on how to translate certain specialised terms related to Brazilian criminal law and criminal procedure.

On the second day, Dr. Cornelia Plag (a professor at the University of Coimbra and a regular attendee of the workshop) presented about “Core text types in Portuguese criminal procedure“. This was followed by a discussion and group translation of specialised terms and common phrases appearing at Portuguese criminal courts.
